PTI Takes Legal Action Over Alleged Breach of Court Order
The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party has filed a formal contempt petition against the Pakistani government following what it describes as a deliberate failure to comply with a court order regarding the medical treatment of imprisoned former Prime Minister Imran Khan. The move escalates an already tense standoff between PTI and the current administration over Khan's health and conditions of detention.
Naeem Panjutha, a legal adviser for the PTI, confirmed on Saturday that the petition names senior government figures, including the prime minister, law minister, and information minister, among others. The filing also calls on authorities to ensure Khan receives treatment at the specific private hospital that was designated by the court.
What the Court Ordered — and What Happened Instead
Earlier in the week, a three-judge bench issued a clear directive ordering that Khan be transferred from Adiala jail to Shifa International Hospital, a private medical facility in Islamabad, within two days. The order was prompted by repeated concerns raised about Khan's declining health while in custody.
However, rather than complying with the ruling, authorities took Khan to the state-run Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) on Friday for what was described as a brief examination. He was then returned to prison without being given access to his personal physician — a point the PTI has highlighted as a further violation of the court's instructions.
The government defended its decision, stating that the medical assessment at PIMS found no condition requiring urgent or immediate care. Officials cited security concerns at Shifa International Hospital as the reason for redirecting Khan to the state facility instead.
Competing Interpretations of the Court Ruling
A significant point of contention between the government and PTI is how the court order should be interpreted. While authorities appear to view the brief hospital visit as sufficient compliance, PTI contends that the directive requires Khan to remain under continuous medical supervision at the designated private hospital through at least mid-September.
Khan's sister, Uzma Khan, who was present during his examination at PIMS, addressed the media afterward. She stated that while her brother appeared physically robust, he had endured repeated mistreatment during his time in detention. Her comments added a personal dimension to the legal and political dispute surrounding Khan's imprisonment.
Khan's Imprisonment and the Broader Political Context
Imran Khan has been held in custody since August 2023, facing a range of charges that he and his supporters have consistently characterized as politically motivated. His removal from office followed a breakdown in his relationship with Pakistan's powerful military establishment, and his subsequent arrest triggered large-scale protests across the country, including violent incidents involving military installations.
Despite being behind bars, Khan retains a substantial base of popular support throughout Pakistan. Supporters gathered along Islamabad's streets and outside the hospital during his transfer, demonstrating the continued public interest in his situation.

PTI leaders have indicated that the government's handling of the hospital transfer will serve as a rallying point for their supporters. The party views the episode as a further example of institutional pressure being applied against Khan and says it will intensify their mobilization efforts ahead of a planned nationwide protest scheduled for September 27.
The contempt petition represents one of the more direct legal challenges PTI has mounted against the government in recent months. Pakistan's Information Minister Attaullah Tarar maintained that the decision to send Khan to PIMS rather than Shifa International was driven by legitimate security considerations and was not intended as a defiance of the court. The government has not publicly addressed whether it plans to respond formally to the contempt petition or comply with the original ruling going forward.
The dispute over Khan's medical treatment reflects the broader struggle over his treatment in custody, his access to legal and medical support, and the degree to which judicial orders are being followed by the executive branch. These questions are likely to remain at the center of Pakistani political debate in the weeks leading up to PTI's planned demonstration.
