In a significant development during the ongoing trial concerning the death of legendary Argentine footballer Diego Maradona, a nephrologist informed the court that the athlete's deteriorating kidney function should have been a clear warning sign for his medical team. Maradona, who passed away at the age of 60 in November 2020, was reportedly suffering from 'chronic kidney disease,' according to the expert testimony presented near Buenos Aires.
Maradona's death occurred while he was recuperating at a rented residence in the Buenos Aires suburb of Tigre, following surgery for a brain clot. The official cause of death was attributed to heart failure and acute pulmonary oedema, a condition characterized by fluid accumulation in the lungs. The current legal proceedings are investigating the conduct of seven healthcare professionals, including Maradona’s personal physician, psychiatrist, and nursing staff, who face accusations of providing substandard care.
Overlooked Symptoms and Inadequate Monitoring
The nephrologist, Hernan Trimarchi, emphasized that Maradona's enlarged kidneys, coupled with lesions, were indicative of his medical history, which included obesity, cocaine use, and hypertension. Trimarchi asserted that, at a minimum, the patient should have received daily medical examinations, consistent nursing care, regular blood tests, and continuous monitoring of his vital signs. Trimarchi also pointed out that Maradona's noticeable increase in body size and fluctuating blood pressure readings should have raised immediate concerns among his caregivers. Earlier in the trial, the court was presented with images depicting Maradona shortly before his death, showing a severely distended abdomen, a symptom consistent with oedema. An autopsy report subsequently revealed that the football star endured several hours of agony prior to his demise.
Criminal Negligence Allegations and Potential Penalties
This testimony marks the third instance in which a specialist has informed the court that Maradona’s medical team failed to identify crucial warning signs. The trial is also scrutinizing the decision to allow Maradona to recover at a private residence rather than in a medical facility, questioning whether this choice endangered his life. The seven accused individuals vehemently deny any responsibility for Maradona's death. If convicted, they face severe penalties, with potential prison sentences of up to 25 years.
