Vietnam's Entry into Commercial Space
Hanoi-based aerospace company VinSpace has confirmed a partnership with Elon Musk's SpaceX for the launch of its initial satellites. This collaboration is set to occur in the second quarter of 2027, utilizing SpaceX's Transporter ride-share program to place the satellites into Earth's orbit. The agreement signifies a crucial development for Vietnam's aspirations in the commercial space sector.
The primary objective of these missions, according to VinSpace, is to enable the in-orbit testing of its proprietary technology under operational conditions. This will facilitate the expansion of international cooperation and lay the groundwork for the gradual commercialization of space technology within Vietnam. The company emphasized that it would retain full responsibility for the research, development, manufacturing, and ongoing operation of the satellites following their deployment.

Vu Trong Thu, CEO of VinSpace, highlighted the strategic importance of this collaboration. "Testing domestically developed satellite modules in orbit is an important condition for transforming the research and development capabilities of VinSpace’s engineering team into real missions," Thu stated. He further elaborated that the contract with SpaceX represents a vital progression in VinSpace's long-term vision. This vision aims to foster a robust commercial aerospace ecosystem in Vietnam and integrate the nation into the global space value chain.
This announcement follows VinSpace's earlier declaration in April, outlining its intention to manufacture and launch its first satellites by 2027. The company, which is owned by Vietnam's wealthiest individual, Pham Nhat Vuong, is poised to play a pivotal role in advancing the country's space capabilities.
Vietnam's Growing Space Ambitions
Vietnam has been actively engaged in space exploration for some time, with its first satellite, VINASAT-1, launched in 2008. Since then, the nation has successfully deployed multiple satellites into orbit, steadily building its expertise and infrastructure in this domain. Company filings indicate that Vingroup founder and chairman Pham Nhat Vuong holds a commanding 71 percent stake in VinSpace. Vingroup maintains a 19 percent stake, while Pham's sons, Pham Nhat Quan Anh and Pham Nhat Minh Hoang, each hold stakes of approximately 5 percent.
