Renewed Clashes Erupt in Yemen
Yemeni government forces have reported successfully repelling an attack by Houthi fighters on strategic positions situated along the al-Mafalis front, located south of Haifan in the southeastern sector of Taiz province. This incident marks a significant escalation in military activities, which have been observed across various governorates in recent days.
According to an official from the Tor al-Bahah military axis, an entity aligned with government forces, the 4th Infantry Hashd Brigade effectively thwarted the Houthi advance on Thursday. The official further stated that the Houthi militants sustained considerable casualties during the engagement on the al-Mafalis front. The Tor al-Bahah military and security campaign is reportedly focused on countering and neutralizing assaults by the Houthi militias, with officials expressing confidence in the eventual defeat and collapse of the rebel group.
Adding to the reports of increased military action, Waddah al-Dubeish, a spokesperson for the government forces, confirmed that their air defense systems successfully intercepted Houthi reconnaissance drones. These drones were reportedly operating in the airspace over al-Makha (Mocha), a crucial port city located in the southwestern part of the country. These defensive actions highlight the government's efforts to counter Houthi aerial surveillance and potential attacks.
Escalation Follows Government Offensive
The recent intensification of hostilities comes shortly after the Yemeni government announced on Wednesday that it had initiated its own offensive. This involved targeting Houthi positions and gatherings through artillery shelling and drone strikes across multiple governorates. Yemeni state television detailed that these operations resulted in the deaths and injuries of several Houthi fighters. Specifically, artillery shelling by government forces against Houthi concentrations and reinforcements near al-Fakhir market in the northern part of al-Dhalea Governorate was reported to have caused significant casualties among the group's members.
Fayyad al-Numan, Yemen's deputy minister of information, was quoted by the German news agency dpa confirming that government forces executed "intensive shelling with heavy artillery and drones on positions belonging to Houthi militias on several fronts" on Wednesday. These coordinated strikes underscore a deliberate shift in strategy by the government to respond decisively to Houthi activities.
Government Adopts Firm Stance on Peace
In a significant declaration, Rashad al-Alimi, the head of Yemen's Presidential Leadership Council, asserted a new policy regarding Houthi actions. He stated, "From now on, there will be no action undertaken by the Houthi militias without a comprehensive response or deterrence." This statement signals a more aggressive and less tolerant approach to Houthi provocations.
Al-Alimi also conveyed the government's reservations about the prospect of a new truce, indicating that it is "not in favour of a new truce that reproduces past experiences." He emphasized that the government's preference is for a permanent and sustainable peace, fundamentally based on the establishment of a state that holds a sole monopoly on weapons and exercises undisputed sovereignty. Despite this firm stance, al-Alimi did offer an olive branch, stating, "The opportunity remains available to lay down arms and engage in building a homeland that can accommodate everyone." This suggests that while the government is prepared for military action, it still holds out hope for a political resolution.
Resumption of Intermittent Clashes
Yemen had experienced a period of relative de-escalation in the conflict between government forces and the Houthi group since April 2022. This period offered some respite from the intense fighting that had characterized much of the war. However, this fragile calm was disrupted in early July, when intermittent clashes between the two factions resumed. These renewed engagements have unfortunately led to dozens of fatalities and injuries, underscoring the volatile nature of the conflict and the ongoing challenges to achieving lasting peace in the region.
