The Cincinnati Masters has seen a series of compelling matches, with top-ranked players battling not only their opponents but also the elements. World number one Aryna Sabalenka faced a particularly resilient challenge, ultimately securing her place in the third round alongside fellow Grand Slam champions Elena Rybakina and Mirra Andreeva.
Sabalenka's second-round encounter against Australia's Talia Gibson proved to be a test of endurance and nerve. Despite holding a dominant position, Sabalenka needed six match points to finally overcome Gibson. The Australian demonstrated remarkable tenacity, saving five match points in the 12th game of the second set. However, Sabalenka ultimately prevailed in the tiebreaker, delivering a final winner to close out the match with a score of 6-2, 7-6 (7/2). “I’m super tired. This is crazy weather,” Sabalenka commented after her victory. “Talia played great tennis and was more aggressive in the second set. She put more pressure on my service games. I’m glad I stayed calm and pulled it out in straight sets.”
Having previously won the Cincinnati title in 2024, Sabalenka is aiming for a strong performance to build momentum for the upcoming US Open, where she seeks her first Grand Slam title of the year. While she has secured three titles in 2026, her most recent win was in Miami back in March.

Joining Sabalenka in the third round were Australian Open winner Elena Rybakina and Roland Garros champion Mirra Andreeva, both of whom advanced with convincing displays. Rybakina, who recently finished as runner-up to Iga Swiatek in Toronto and is steadily climbing the world rankings, defeated Taylor Townsend 6-3, 6-4. Andreeva delivered a dominant performance, crushing Oleksandra Oliynykova with a score of 6-1, 6-0, breaking her opponent five times and saving all seven break points she faced.
Rybakina emphasized the importance of recovery after a demanding run in Toronto and expressed satisfaction with her low-stress start in Cincinnati. “Today I’m happy with the serve,” she stated. “Definitely it helped me a lot. Last week in Toronto was very difficult. A lot of three-set matches.”
Fourth-seeded American Coco Gauff faced a more arduous path to victory, overcoming 43rd-ranked Russian Liudmila Samsonova in a three-set battle, winning 2-6, 6-4, 6-1. The defending champion, seventh-seeded Iga Swiatek, who secured her first title of a challenging season in Toronto, comfortably defeated Emiliana Arango of Colombia 6-3, 6-0.

In the men's ATP draw, the evening session was also affected by blustery conditions and a brief rain delay. American Ben Shelton, who recently triumphed at the Montreal Masters, was unexpectedly eliminated by Portugal's Jaime Faria, ranked 79th in the world. Faria achieved his first top-10 victory by rallying from a 4-1 deficit in the second set to defeat Shelton 6-4, 6-4.
“These moments, you got to take it all in and just enjoy it,” Faria remarked, highlighting the emotional significance of his win. “It’s a very emotional moment for me and my team, to do it here in front of an amazing crowd and against the home player at night at an amazing venue just makes it a little more special.”
Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime, the men's second seed, made a strong return to competition after withdrawing from his home Masters due to back pain. Playing for the first time since his five-set quarterfinal loss to Novak Djokovic at Wimbledon, Auger-Aliassime defeated 2022 Cincinnati finalist Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-3, 7-5. He appeared fully recovered, dispatching Tsitsipas in 88 minutes, breaking his opponent three times in the second set and sealing the match with his seventh ace on match point.
