Maresca indicated that in the current transfer climate, 'anything can happen' as the window remains open for both acquisitions and sales.
The speculation intensified following a widely circulated image on social media, purportedly showing Rodri traveling on a budget airline flight from Madrid to Liverpool. The photograph, which quickly went viral, depicted the former Ballon d’Or recipient carrying luggage adorned with his name, the Spanish national flag, and his squad number. Despite the buzz generated by this image, reports suggest that Real Madrid, a club known for its significant financial dealings, has reportedly cooled its interest in Rodri due to the substantial financial outlay that would be required for such a transfer.
Manager Maresca's Comments on Transfer Activity
Addressing reporters on Friday, Maresca stated, "First of all, we already said the transfer window is open, we can buy and sell players, anything can happen." He confirmed seeing Rodri at the club's facilities, noting, "I’ve just seen Rodri now in the building, I gave him a big hug, he looks good, so we’ll see what happens." The manager also confirmed that Rodri, a World Cup winner, is fit to resume training after undergoing back surgery in late July, assuaging concerns about his physical condition.
When questioned about Chelsea's reported deadline for bids on their Argentine midfielder Enzo Fernandez and whether this implied any imminent transfer activity for City, Maresca responded with a smile, indicating that Manchester City would not be making any new signings on that particular Friday. Maresca acknowledged the possibility of further squad adjustments, stating, "For sure there are things we need to do. For now, how many, I don’t know. It can be one, it can be two (players)." He added that any incoming transfers would also depend on potential player departures. However, he reiterated his immediate priorities: "Now in this moment, 48 hours before a final, my first in this club, my focus is not about players leaving or arriving, it’s just how we can prepare the best way in the game and try to win the final."
Community Shield: A Trophy, Not a Friendly
The Italian manager firmly dismissed any notion that the Community Shield, which pits the Premier League champions against the FA Cup winners, should be regarded as merely a friendly match. He underscored Manchester City's determination to commence the season by securing silverware.
"For me personally it’s a trophy. And when the trophy is there, the final is there, you always try to win the game," Maresca asserted. "So no friendly at all. It’s a trophy that we’re going to try our best to win, to win the first trophy."
