Mass Funeral Held in Gaza City for Victims of Airstrikes
Fifty Palestinians have been buried in a mass funeral in Gaza City after their bodies were recovered from the rubble of buildings destroyed during Israeli airstrikes in the early stages of the conflict, which began in October 2023. The ceremony took place on Thursday and brought together grieving families from several neighborhoods, including Tal al-Hawa, Zeitoun, Sabra, Sheikh Radwan, and Shati.
Among the victims were members of the al-Sawafiri, al-Batniji, and Gharbiya families. The recovery of the remains followed weeks of painstaking search operations conducted under exceptionally difficult circumstances by rescue teams working with severely limited equipment.
Recovery Operations Hampered by Lack of Equipment
Rescue workers in Gaza are facing significant obstacles in their efforts to locate and recover the remains of those still buried. According to reports, teams currently have access to only one excavator, which is dramatically slowing the pace of recovery. Gaza's Civil Defence has estimated that approximately 8,000 Palestinians remain missing and are believed to be buried under the ruins of collapsed structures across the territory.
Munir al-Bursh, director general of Gaza's Ministry of Health, issued an urgent appeal for heavy machinery, specialized search and recovery equipment, and forensic medicine supplies to be permitted entry into Gaza. He emphasized that such resources are critical not only for locating victims but also for properly identifying their remains.
Context: Scale of Destruction and Ongoing Ceasefire Violations
The latest funeral follows another significant burial held on August 4, when thousands gathered to mourn 112 members of the Abu Sharia and al-Hasayna families. Those remains had been recovered from the Sabra neighborhood, the site of a November 2023 Israeli strike.
Both events are taking place against the backdrop of a fragile ceasefire agreement that came into effect in October. Despite the agreement, Israeli military operations have continued. Since the ceasefire took effect, at least 1,266 Palestinians have reportedly been killed and more than 4,200 others wounded.
The broader conflict, which has lasted over two years, has had a catastrophic impact on the Gaza Strip. Official figures indicate that at least 73,400 Palestinians have been killed and more than 174,300 wounded, with the majority being women and children. An estimated 90 percent of Gaza's infrastructure has been damaged or destroyed during the course of the fighting.
Diplomatic Developments: Hamas Meets Qatari Officials
On the diplomatic front, a Hamas delegation led by Khalil al-Hayya, head of the group's political bureau, traveled to Doha to meet with Qatari Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani. The meeting focused on the latest developments in Gaza and ongoing efforts to achieve a lasting resolution to the conflict.
Qatar's Ministry of Foreign Affairs released a statement following the meeting, noting that Sheikh Mohammed commended Hamas for reaffirming its commitment to a United States-backed proposal that would involve the disarmament of the group as part of a comprehensive plan to end hostilities. The 15-point plan, announced by US President Donald Trump, also calls for a full Israeli military withdrawal from Gaza and a complete cessation of the war.
However, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has publicly rejected the proposal, creating uncertainty around prospects for a durable peace agreement. Sheikh Mohammed used the occasion to call on the broader international community to apply pressure on Israel to comply with its obligations under the existing ceasefire arrangement and to bring an end to continued military actions against the Palestinian population.
Families Continue to Search for the Missing
While diplomatic discussions proceed, many families in Gaza remain in anguish over relatives who have not yet been accounted for. Recovery operations continue, though the combination of widespread structural damage and inadequate equipment means the process is expected to take considerable time.
