Civilian Casualties Mount in Recent Ukrainian Attacks
Recent Russian military actions have led to the deaths of at least six individuals and injured 12 others across Ukraine, according to local authorities. The attacks highlight the persistent danger faced by civilians in various regions of the country as the conflict continues.
Kherson Bears the Brunt of Drone Strikes
The southern Ukrainian city of Kherson, a frequent target of Russian forces, experienced a particularly devastating drone attack. Oleksandr Prokudin, the governor of the Kherson region, reported that a Russian drone struck a bus, resulting in the deaths of at least four people and wounding four others. The incident occurred around 8:50 AM local time. Prokudin shared images on Telegram depicting a yellow bus with damaged windows and bloodied steps, indicating the severity of the attack. The injured individuals were subsequently transported to a hospital for treatment.
In a separate drone incident within Kherson, another person was killed and one injured when a drone targeted a car in the city's central area. Ukrainian officials have consistently accused Russia of deliberately targeting civilians in Kherson, a city that was under Russian control for several months from March to November 2022. Following a Ukrainian counteroffensive, Russian forces withdrew to the opposite bank of the Dnipro River, from where they continue to launch assaults.
Earlier in the month, Ukraine condemned what it described as a 'safari' targeting civilians in Kherson, citing an instance where an FPV drone reportedly pursued a man in a street market. Before the full-scale invasion in February 2022, Kherson had a population of approximately 280,000.
Zaporizhzhia Also Targeted
Further east, in the southeastern city of Zaporizhzhia, another Russian attack claimed one life and injured seven people. Regional Governor Ivan Fedorov stated that Russian drones struck the regional capital, causing damage to both residential and non-residential structures and igniting a fire. The repeated targeting of urban areas underscores the widespread impact of the conflict on civilian infrastructure and lives.
Rising Civilian Death Tolls
The United Nations has reported a concerning increase in civilian deaths throughout the current year. Last month alone, 437 civilians were killed in Ukraine, marking the highest monthly toll since May 2022. Conversely, Russian authorities reported 79 civilian fatalities in Ukrainian attacks during July, an increase from the previous month. These figures underscore the escalating human cost on both sides of the conflict.
Black Sea Incident and Territorial Claims
Beyond land-based strikes, the conflict also extends to maritime operations. The Russian Ministry of Defence, as reported by the Russian news agency Interfax, stated that Russian forces struck a cargo vessel in the Black Sea near the Ukrainian port of Odesa. The ministry claimed the vessel was transporting military cargo. Separately, Russia's Defence Ministry asserted that its air defense systems intercepted 453 Ukrainian drones overnight across various regions. The ministry also announced that Russian forces had captured the settlement of Vodianske in Ukraine's Donetsk region, a claim that Al Jazeera has not independently verified.
Drone Incidents Within Russia and Prisoner Exchanges
The conflict's reach also extends into Russian territory. In the city of Ufa in the Russian republic of Bashkortostan, authorities were engaged in extinguishing a small fire after a drone reportedly crashed in an industrial area. Radiy Khabirov, the head of the republic, indicated on Telegram that a drone also struck an apartment building and several cars in Ufa, an oil refining hub, leading to one injury. These incidents suggest an expansion of drone activities beyond the immediate front lines.
Amidst the ongoing hostilities, there have been instances of prisoner exchanges. Russia's Defence Ministry confirmed that both Russia and Ukraine exchanged 103 prisoners of war each. Such exchanges have occurred periodically throughout the more than four-year conflict, leading to the release of thousands of captured personnel from both sides.
The continuous cycle of attacks and counter-attacks, coupled with the rising civilian death tolls, paints a grim picture of a protracted conflict with significant human and material consequences. International efforts to broker a lasting peace remain stalled, leaving both nations grappling with the escalating costs of war.
