Widespread Arrests and Military Operations in West Bank
Israeli military forces have significantly intensified their operations across the occupied West Bank, leading to the arrest of dozens of Palestinians. This surge in activity follows a recent shooting incident that resulted in the deaths of four Palestinians and two Israeli soldiers. The crackdown includes extensive raids, particularly in the village of Tal, southwest of Nablus, where the shooting occurred.
On Saturday morning, Israeli forces reportedly arrested nearly 50 Palestinians in Tal, conducting raids on approximately 70 homes. Visual evidence, including footage shared by Quds News Network, depicted blindfolded individuals being led away by Israeli soldiers, underscoring the nature of the ongoing operation. Military officials have characterized these actions as an "extensive" response to Friday's deadly shooting.
Response to Deadly Attack
The heightened military presence and arrest campaign were initiated after an attack near the unauthorized Havat Gilad settlement. This incident claimed the lives of two Israeli soldiers and injured three others. In response, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defence Minister Israel Katz ordered a "wide-scale military operation" targeting Palestinian villages throughout the occupied West Bank.
Concurrently, reports from witnesses and various sources indicate that Israeli settlers have launched their own attacks on several Palestinian communities within the Nablus governorate. These attacks have reportedly involved arson, resulting in damage to Palestinian homes and other properties.
Rising Casualties and International Concern
The Palestinian Health Ministry has reported a significant increase in fatalities, stating that at least 87 Palestinians have been killed by Israelis in the West Bank since the beginning of the year. Of these, 21 deaths are attributed to settlers. Critics argue that the perceived lack of international pressure on Israel regarding the situation in Gaza, coupled with the rhetoric of certain far-right Israeli ministers, has emboldened settlers.
Francesca Albanese, the UN Special Rapporteur on the occupied Palestinian territories, vocalized strong condemnation of the attacks. On Saturday, Albanese described Israeli actions against Palestinian civilians in the West Bank as "pogroms." She urgently called for an immediate arms embargo against Israel and a cessation of trade relations. Albanese asserted that Israeli civilians and the military were "joining forces" in these attacks, suggesting that responsibility extends beyond individual political figures. She emphasized that such measures are mandated under international law.
Israeli human rights organizations have also appealed to the international community, urging immediate intervention to curb state-backed settler violence in the West Bank. They highlight a significant escalation in such violence since the onset of the conflict in Gaza in 2023.
Arrests Across the West Bank
Beyond Nablus, arrests have also been reported in the northern city of Jenin and various other towns and villages across its governorate. Israeli forces have conducted multiple home raids and deployed substantial numbers of troops in these areas. Similar operations unfolded in Tubas, in the northeast, and the Far’a refugee camp, south of the city. Wafa, the Palestinian news agency, detailed that soldiers arrived in Tubas with a large convoy of military vehicles, conducting approximately three hours of home raids across several neighborhoods before proceeding to the Far’a refugee camp.
Other locations targeted by Israeli forces include the village of Far’ata, east of Qalqilya, where at least eight Palestinians were reportedly injured. The Aqbat Jabr refugee camp in Jericho and the village of Kobar in the Ramallah and el-Bireh Governorate were also subjected to raids.
Funerals for the four Palestinians killed in Tal on Friday were held overnight. Residents indicated that they were compelled to conduct the ceremonies at night because Israeli authorities prohibited daytime funerals. Reports suggest that only a limited number of Palestinians were permitted to attend.
Disputed Accounts and Systemic Violence
The shooting in Tal represents the deadliest incident in the area in months, with conflicting accounts from both sides regarding the events. Tal is under the control of the Palestinian Authority, and Israelis are generally not permitted to enter. Footage from the scene reportedly showed rifle-wielding settlers confronting Palestinians. Another video depicted a Palestinian man disarming a settler and fatally shooting him, which some interpret as an act of self-defense. Subsequently, Israeli soldiers reportedly shot and killed the Palestinian man, along with three other Palestinians.
Ubai Al Aboudi, a human rights activist based in Ramallah, informed Al Jazeera that settler attacks on Palestinian villages are systemic and occur with "complete impunity." He emphasized that these are "not isolated incidents" but rather a pervasive issue "happening all across the West Bank." Al Aboudi cited a previous attack on Tal village on July 18, just a week before the recent shooting, where alleged "hikers" — as described by Israeli officials — reportedly set fire to a family home with the occupants still inside. He credited the residents of Tal for miraculously rescuing the family.
Human Rights Watch has also urged the Israeli government to take immediate action to prevent retaliatory attacks by settlers against Palestinians. Sarah Sanbar, acting Israel and Palestine researcher at Human Rights Watch, warned that "years of lawlessness and impunity for attacks have turned the West Bank into a powder keg waiting to explode, and decisive action is urgently needed."
