Asian Champions League Elite Finals to Remain in Saudi Arabia
The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has solidified Saudi Arabia's role as the host for the upcoming three editions of the Asian Champions League Elite finals. This decision follows the country's successful execution of the first two tournaments, which have been held there since the restructuring of Asia's premier club competition. The provisional hosting rights initially granted to Saudi Arabia have now been made permanent, ensuring the quarterfinals, semifinals, and final stages of the event will take place in the nation for the foreseeable future.
This arrangement means that Saudi Arabia will host the pinnacle of Asian club football through to the 2028-2029 season, building on its experience from the 2024-2025 and 2025-2026 seasons. The centralized venue format for the concluding stages of the tournament has become a characteristic feature of the revamped competition.
Tournament Structure and Recent Victories
The Asian Champions League Elite, which brings together the domestic champions from the leading leagues across the continent, is set to expand its league phase from 24 to 32 teams. This expansion reflects the growing competitive landscape of Asian club football and aims to include a broader representation of top-tier clubs.
The qualification rounds for the next edition of the tournament are scheduled to commence on August 11. Following these preliminary stages, the draw for the expanded league phase will be conducted in Kuala Lumpur on August 18. The league phase matches are then slated to begin on September 14, marking the official start of the main competition.
In the two instances the finals have been hosted in Saudi Arabia, the Jeddah-based club Al-Ahli has emerged victorious on both occasions. In 2025, Al-Ahli secured the title by defeating Japan's Kawasaki Frontale. They followed this success with another triumph in May, overcoming Machida Zelvia, also from Japan, in a closely contested final. Last year's final saw Al-Ahli claim a 1-0 victory after extra time against Machida Zelvia of the Japanese J1 League, solidifying their status as back-to-back champions.
Historical Performance and Notable Clubs
While Al-Ahli has recently dominated the finals hosted in Saudi Arabia, another prominent Saudi Pro League side, Al-Hilal, holds the record for the most titles in the competition's history. Al-Hilal has lifted the trophy four times from a record nine appearances in the final, underscoring their consistent presence at the top echelon of Asian club football.
Beyond Saudi Arabian clubs, other teams have also left their mark on the tournament. Japan's Urawa Red Diamonds and South Korea's Pohang Steelers have each won the competition twice. Both clubs have reached the final on three separate occasions, demonstrating their historical strength and competitive prowess within the Asian football landscape.
The continued hosting of the Asian Champions League Elite finals in Saudi Arabia is expected to further enhance the region's profile in international football, providing a consistent platform for top-tier club competition and showcasing the infrastructure available for major sporting events.
