South Korea Experiences Unprecedented Heat

South Korea has experienced its highest recorded temperature, with the southeastern city of Yangsan reaching 42.5 degrees Celsius (108.5F) on a recent Sunday. This record-setting event is part of a broader pattern of extreme weather conditions worldwide, underscoring the impact of climate change.

For five consecutive days, Yangsan's temperatures surpassed 40C (104F), according to the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA). As a result, heat warnings have been issued across much of the country, with temperatures climbing into the upper 30s in several cities. More than 20 areas were under emergency heatwave alerts, a new warning category introduced due to increasingly severe summer temperatures.

Rising Frequency of Heatwaves

The KMA reports that the average annual number of heatwave days in South Korea has more than doubled in the past five years, from an average of eight days in the 1970s to 19. A heatwave day is characterized by a maximum temperature of at least 33C (91.4F), while a tropical night occurs when overnight temperatures do not drop below 25C (77F).

Scientists attribute the increasing frequency, duration, and intensity of heatwaves and other extreme weather events to climate change driven by human activities.

Global Weather Extremes

South Korea's record temperatures are not an isolated event. Extreme weather is affecting countries across multiple continents. In Japan, severe heat has prompted heatstroke alerts in 30 of the country's 47 prefectures. Public broadcaster NHK has warned residents of dangerous conditions.

Europe is also facing extreme weather, with wildfires driven by high temperatures and strong winds sweeping through parts of Greece, leading to evacuations. Hot and dry conditions persist in Spain and France, increasing the risk of further fires.

In North Africa, countries like Tunisia, Algeria, and Morocco are battling major wildfires fueled by extreme heat and strong winds. Tunisia has called for international assistance as emergency crews fight to protect forests, farmland, and communities.

Heightened Risks in the United States

Meanwhile, the western United States is experiencing a dangerous heatwave, with forecasters warning of potential record-breaking temperatures. This increases the risk of wildfires in drought-affected areas, some of which are already burning.

These global patterns of extreme weather highlight the urgent need for addressing climate change and mitigating its effects, as scientists continue to warn of more frequent and severe events in the future.
