Diplomatic Pressure Mounts Over Moroccan Man's Death in Bologna
Morocco's government has formally called on Italy to provide a full and transparent explanation of the circumstances surrounding the death of Abderrahim Fakir, a 42-year-old Moroccan national who died on Sunday after being physically restrained by police in the northern Italian city of Bologna. The incident has ignited significant public unrest and prompted a diplomatic response from Rabat.
Morocco's Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement on Tuesday demanding that Italian authorities "fully clarify" the details of Fakir's death and take appropriate legal action to determine who, if anyone, bears responsibility. The Moroccan embassy in Italy echoed these concerns, stating that it was in everyone's interest to shed "full light" on the tragedy through a process marked by "rigour, impartiality and transparency."
What Happened to Abderrahim Fakir?
According to Italian police accounts, officers were called to the scene after neighbours raised concerns about Fakir's erratic behaviour. When officers arrived, they reportedly informed ambulance personnel that Fakir appeared to be experiencing a psychiatric episode. A video recorded by a local resident, which has since circulated widely, shows Fakir calling out for help while two officers held him face-down against the ground for several minutes. He died shortly after.
Italian prosecutors in Bologna opened an investigation into the incident on Monday. Six individuals have been placed under preliminary investigation, including two police officers and four ambulance crew members. Authorities are examining possible manslaughter charges while awaiting the results of medical and forensic examinations.
Political Reactions Divided
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni addressed the incident in a post on social media platform X, describing Fakir's death as "unacceptable" and calling for the truth to be pursued "to the very end, without prejudice and without leniency for anyone." Meloni stressed the importance of a thorough investigation into potential police misconduct.
However, the prime minister also used the occasion to condemn the violence that erupted during protests, warning that those who used the incident as justification to attack officers or endanger innocent bystanders were not seeking justice but rather "confrontation."
Her remarks drew criticism from opposition politicians. Ilaria Cucchi, a member of parliament representing the Green and Left Alliance, accused Meloni's government of fostering a climate of hostility through policies she described as "steeped in hatred and racism." Cucchi, whose own brother died in Italian police custody in 2009, also expressed strong disapproval of public statements supporting the officers involved, telling AFP she felt "disgust" at what she called inappropriate expressions of solidarity directed toward them.
Protests Erupt Across Italy
Large demonstrations broke out in Bologna on Monday, with residents gathering to condemn the police's conduct during Fakir's arrest. Clashes between protesters and riot police resulted in 54 officers being injured, according to Italian law enforcement. Reports from Italian news broadcaster Sky TG24 indicated that at least 11 protesters were also hurt during the unrest. Separate demonstrations were also reported in Naples.
A rally organised by Bologna's left-wing Mayor Matteo Lepore drew significant crowds. Among those who spoke was Yossra Fakir, the deceased man's niece, who addressed the gathering with a message focused on accountability rather than retaliation.
"We are not here to ask for hatred, we are not here to ask for revenge. We are here to ask for the truth."
Her words resonated with many in the crowd who had gathered peacefully to call for justice.
Comparisons to George Floyd Case
The manner of Fakir's death has led many commentators and members of the public to draw comparisons with the killing of George Floyd in the United States in 2020. Floyd died in Minneapolis after a police officer held his knee against Floyd's neck for an extended period, cutting off his air supply. That incident triggered a global wave of protests against racial injustice and police brutality.
Fakir, who had come to Italy as a child at the age of five, had spent most of his life in the country. The circumstances of his death — being held to the ground by officers while calling for help — have prompted many to question the methods used in his restraint and whether appropriate care was taken.
Investigation Ongoing
As authorities continue their inquiry, pressure is mounting from both domestic and international actors for a transparent and impartial process. The outcome of the investigation, including the findings of medical examinations and the conclusions of prosecutors, is expected to be closely watched by both the Italian and Moroccan governments, as well as by civil society groups advocating for accountability in cases of deaths during police custody.
