The death toll from this year's monsoon season is distributed across several Indian states, each grappling with the immense challenges posed by the heavy rains. Assam has been particularly affected, reporting at least 87 fatalities. Within Assam, the Sivasagar district alone accounts for a significant portion of these deaths, with 47 lives lost due to floods and landslides. The scale of the disaster in Assam highlights the vulnerability of certain regions to such extreme weather events.

Kerala, another state frequently impacted by monsoon rains, has recorded at least 15 deaths. Additionally, seven individuals remain missing following days of continuous heavy rainfall. Chief Minister VD Satheesan confirmed that over 10,000 people have been compelled to seek refuge in more than 300 relief camps established throughout the state. These camps provide temporary shelter and essential supplies to those whose homes have been inundated or damaged.

Further north, Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir has also suffered considerable losses. A report from the public state broadcaster indicated that at least 31 people have died in the region due to intense bursts of rain. These localized, heavy downpours can quickly overwhelm drainage systems and lead to flash floods and landslides, particularly in mountainous terrains.

Beyond floods and landslides, lightning strikes have emerged as another deadly consequence of the monsoon season. In Jharkhand, at least 14 people have been killed by lightning, with the majority being farm workers caught in open fields during thunderstorms. This continues a worrying trend, as Jharkhand recorded over 200 deaths in 2025, predominantly attributed to lightning strikes associated with thunderstorms, according to data released by the India Meteorological Department in January.

Monsoon-related deaths are an unfortunate annual occurrence in India, often following prolonged summer periods marked by water scarcity and drought in many parts of the country. This pattern of extreme weather—oscillating between severe drought and intense flooding—is not confined to India's borders but extends across the broader South Asian region.

Neighboring Sri Lanka has also experienced significant hardship due to the monsoon. The country has reported at least eight deaths and the displacement of 12,000 individuals as a result of monsoon flooding. This situation is particularly challenging given that Sri Lanka's eastern regions simultaneously faced a severe drought. Authorities were compelled to transport drinking water to residents in tanker trucks to address the acute water shortages in those areas, illustrating the contrasting and often simultaneous impacts of extreme weather.

The Sri Lankan government indicated last month that the extreme weather conditions are largely attributable to this year's El Niño phenomenon. El Niño is a climate pattern characterized by the warming of surface temperatures in the central and eastern equatorial Pacific Ocean. This occurs when the normal east-to-west trade winds weaken or even reverse, pushing warm water eastward. Such shifts significantly disrupt global weather and rainfall patterns, leading to more unpredictable and often more intense weather events in various parts of the world, including the South Asian monsoon region.
