Tragic Incident Unfolds During Live Stream

Cesar Gastelum, a 24-year-old Mexican social media influencer known for his comedic and lifestyle content on TikTok, was fatally shot while live-streaming an event to his followers. The incident occurred near Culiacán, a city in northern Mexico that has been a focal point of ongoing conflict between rival factions. This event follows a pattern of violence targeting social media personalities in the area, including the killing of TikToker Valeria Marquez the previous year.

Who Was Cesar Gastelum?

Gastelum had cultivated a significant online presence, boasting over 700,000 followers on his TikTok account, where he regularly shared engaging videos. His content primarily revolved around humor and daily life, attracting a large and dedicated audience. His last video was posted just days before the tragic event.

Details of the Shooting

The fatal shooting took place on Tuesday at approximately 8:15 PM local time (2:15 AM GMT) in a KFC car park in Tres Rios, Culiacán. Gastelum was reportedly live-streaming with two friends when two individuals on a motorbike approached and opened fire. Mexican media reports indicate that Gastelum was struck and killed, while his companions remained unharmed.

Initial confusion surrounded the incident due to the attire of Gastelum and his friends. They were observed wearing bright orange clothing and carrying delivery bags, leading police to initially surmise that Gastelum might have been a delivery driver. A video capturing the moment of the attack, reviewed by news agencies, shows Gastelum laughing with his friends before two helmeted assailants on a motorcycle appear. One of the individuals is seen drawing a weapon and firing at Gastelum before they quickly flee the scene. Notably, the shooting occurred in close proximity to the local prosecutor’s office.

"The actual perpetrators – and, if applicable, the mastermind – must be arrested, and the reason behind this tragic homicide must be uncovered," stated Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum.

Investigation Underway

As of now, authorities have not made any arrests or publicly identified a motive for Gastelum’s killing. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum addressed reporters, confirming that an investigation is actively underway. She emphasized the importance of apprehending those responsible and uncovering the underlying reasons for the tragic homicide.

Mexico’s Federal Security Cabinet issued a statement on X, indicating that they are analyzing various social media posts made by Gastelum. The statement mentioned that some of these posts referenced a faction within a criminal group, though specific details regarding the group or faction were not disclosed. In addition to social media analysis, the Security Cabinet is reviewing surveillance camera footage as part of their comprehensive investigation. This inquiry is being conducted collaboratively with the attorney general’s office for the State of Sinaloa.

Context of Regional Violence

The state of Sinaloa has been grappling with an intense internal turf war between competing factions of the Sinaloa cartel. This conflict escalated following the July 2024 arrest of co-founder Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada, which created a power vacuum and fueled further instability. This volatile environment has unfortunately claimed the lives of multiple social media influencers. Mexican media has reported that at least 12 social media influencers have been killed in Culiacán alone since September 2024.

One of Gastelum’s own social media posts reportedly showed him at the grave of Leobardo Aispuro, also known as “El Gordo Peruci,” another influencer who was shot and killed in December 2024. Police had previously suggested that Aispuro’s death might have been connected to the ongoing violence between warring factions of the Sinaloa cartel.

Previous Incidents Targeting Influencers

The killing of Cesar Gastelum is not an isolated event. In May 2025, Valeria Marquez, a 23-year-old Mexican beauty influencer, was also fatally shot during a TikTok live stream. This incident took place at the salon where she worked in Zapopan, located in the western state of Jalisco. According to prosecutors, a man entered the salon and opened fire. Marquez’s death was investigated under Mexico’s femicide protocols, which are applied in cases of gender-related killings of women.

More recently, in July, Mexican authorities announced the arrest of Ramon Angel Alvarez Ayala, known as “El R-1,” in Jalisco. Security Minister Omar Garcia Harfuch identified Alvarez Ayala as the leader of a criminal cell associated with the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG). Authorities have linked Alvarez Ayala to the killing of Valeria Marquez and have also accused him of ordering and financing the November 2025 murder of Uruapan Mayor Carlos Manzo. These incidents underscore the severe risks faced by public figures, including social media influencers, in regions affected by organized crime and cartel violence in Mexico.
