This week, voters across Tennessee and Hawaii are heading to the polls for a pivotal round of midterm primary elections. These contests will determine the Republican and Democratic nominees who will compete in the general elections scheduled for November. In Tennessee, the focus is largely on Republican efforts to solidify their political dominance, while Hawaii's primaries feature incumbent Democrats defending their positions against various challengers.
Tennessee's Redrawn Political Map and Key Races
Tennessee's political landscape has been significantly reshaped by a recent Supreme Court decision that impacted federal protections for minority voters. This ruling led the state legislature to redraw its congressional map, notably dividing its sole Black-majority district, which was also the only district held by a Democrat. This redistricting effort has created an environment where Republicans are optimistic about potentially securing all nine of the state's congressional seats.
Beyond the congressional battles, a high-profile Republican primary for governor is also taking place. Incumbent Senator Marsha Blackburn is vying for her party's nomination to succeed Republican Governor Bill Lee. Democrats are also putting forward candidates for both the governorship and an open Senate seat, though these are considered long-shot bids in the predominantly Republican state.

With Cohen no longer in the race, Pearson is competing against a crowded field of Democratic hopefuls, including State Senator London Lamar and healthcare executive Jim Torino. Pearson, a vocal critic of the redistricting, has characterized it as a "racist tool of white supremacy" and believes it will galvanize voters. Campaign discussions have centered on issues such as AI data centers near Memphis, healthcare access, and minimum wage increases.
In another significant Republican primary, State Senator Brent Taylor, endorsed by former President Donald Trump, is facing off against State Representative Todd Warner, retired US Army Sergeant Jeremy Thompson, and four-time congressional candidate Charlotte Bergmann. Six incumbent Republican members of the US House are running unopposed in their primaries and are widely expected to win their general election contests in November.
Democrats are also targeting the Fifth Congressional District, which is perceived as less solidly Republican following the latest redistricting. The National Democratic Campaign Committee has endorsed Chaz Molder, the mayor of Columbia, Tennessee, who is emphasizing his local connections in his campaign to unseat incumbent Republican Andy Ogles.
For the US Senate, incumbent Bill Hagerty is running unopposed in the Republican primary. The Republican gubernatorial primary features US Senator Marsha Blackburn, known for her conservative stance and close ties to Trump, against State Representative Monty Fritts and US Representative John Rose. Blackburn's political career began with the fiscally and socially conservative Tea Party movement. Fritts has made controversial statements, including proposals to ban mosques and "pagan religions," which would likely face constitutional challenges. Rose, a farmer, has highlighted his support for Trump's policies.
Despite a Democrat not holding the Tennessee governorship for 17 years, five Democratic candidates are seeking to change this trend. These include small farm owner Tim Cyr, focusing on rural issues; online pastor Kevin Lee McCants; and steel guitar musician Adam Kurtz.
Hawaii's Primary Challenges for Incumbents
Approximately 4,300 miles away, voters in Hawaii are also participating in their primary elections. The state, with its two Democrat-dominated congressional districts, sees incumbents Ed Case and Jill Tokuda defending their seats. Both are facing three challengers each, with Case generally considered the more vulnerable of the two. State Senator Jarrett Keohokalole has criticized Case for his perceived inaction on federal immigration enforcement within the state.
In contrast, the Republican candidates for both congressional districts, Adriel Lam and State Senator Brenton Awa, are running unopposed in their primaries. Additionally, Governor Joshua Green is leading a crowded Democratic primary field as he seeks a second term in office.
