Government's Approach to Protests
In the wake of widespread protests against Prime Minister Narendra Modi's administration, the Indian government has adopted a dual strategy of legal crackdowns and attempts to connect with the younger generation. These demonstrations, spearheaded by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), primarily target issues related to educational reforms and examination paper leaks.
Arrests and Legal Measures
Across several states governed by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), numerous young individuals have faced arrest. However, the Supreme Court recently mandated the release of minors detained during the protests. Activists and opposition figures have heavily criticized the government's stringent response, leading to the release of many protestors even prior to the court's intervention.
The protests, which began in June at New Delhi's Jantar Mantar, were initially sparked by the leak of medical examination papers. This incident, which compromised the integrity of the exams, has caused significant distress among students, some of whom have tragically taken their own lives. The BJP has ceased legal actions against protestors in states like West Bengal and Maharashtra, following similar decisions in Bihar, Assam, and Delhi.
Surveillance and Social Media Monitoring
There are allegations of the government using advanced surveillance tactics to monitor protestors. Student activist Aishe Ghosh has urged the Delhi High Court to rule the mass surveillance unconstitutional and to ensure the destruction of the collected personal data. In response, the police attempted to apprehend Ghosh by raiding the Communist Party of India (Marxist) office, a move that faced significant opposition.
Social media has also come under scrutiny. Delhi Police have lodged a First Information Report (FIR) against posts deemed defamatory towards Modi, demanding the removal of such content from platforms like X. This has raised concerns about the extent of government surveillance and the potential stifling of free expression.
Judicial Intervention
The Supreme Court has responded to petitions regarding excessive force used by police during the protests. It has called for the preservation of evidence, including video footage, to ensure a fair investigation. Chief Justice Surya Kant emphasized the necessity of accountability, stating that responsibility must be established to uphold the law.
Protest Leaders' Concerns
Despite the Supreme Court's assurances, CJP representative Saurav Das expressed skepticism about the government's commitment to withdrawing legal actions against protestors. The CJP has criticized the FIRs filed against social media users, arguing that citizens have the right to criticize their leaders without fearing reprisals.
Engaging with Gen Z
In an attempt to reconnect with the youthful demographic, the government has launched a campaign targeting Gen Z. This initiative includes social media content that employs contemporary cultural references and language appealing to younger audiences. These efforts aim to reframe the narrative around the protests as part of a broader democratic process.
One notable video features a gym setting where a trainer discusses the implications of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan's resignation. The video suggests that the resignation is a testament to democracy's resilience, rather than a victory for the protestors, while highlighting infrastructure improvements under the current administration.
The BJP's outreach efforts also include posts on platforms like X, using Gen Z-friendly language and aesthetics. Even Prime Minister Modi has participated by sharing selfie-style video messages, aiming to directly engage with the youth and address their concerns.
