Drone Attacks Impact Russian Infrastructure, Casualties Reported
Recent drone assaults within western Russia have reportedly resulted in at least eight fatalities and numerous injuries, according to local authorities. These incidents underscore the ongoing exchange of hostilities between Ukraine and Russia, which has intensified in various regions.
On Saturday, Governor Evgeniy Pervyshov of Tambov reported that an attack on Kotovsk struck a warehouse belonging to Wildberries, Russia's largest online retail company. Pervyshov stated via Telegram, "Seven night-shift employees were killed when enemy drones struck the Wildberries logistics centre." He further detailed that 25 individuals sustained injuries, with one person in critical condition and six seriously wounded, primarily due to shrapnel. The governor also noted the interception of 28 drones, suggesting that the casualty count could have been considerably higher had all drones reached their intended targets.
A separate drone incident in Elektrostal, located in the western Moscow region, also targeted a Wildberries warehouse. Governor Andrei Vorobyov confirmed on Telegram that this attack resulted in at least one death and 37 injuries, with several individuals in serious condition. Additionally, another drone strike ignited a fire at an oil depot in Noginsk, also within the Moscow region, causing injuries to two people.
Reporting from Moscow, Al Jazeera's Dmitry Medvedenko characterized the combined death and injury toll from Saturday's events as "the highest" from Ukrainian attacks on Russian territory "in three years."
Ukraine Justifies Strikes on Logistics Facilities
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, in a statement published on social media, clarified that the two Wildberries warehouses were deemed "significant logistics facilities." He claimed these sites were utilized to "ensure the supply of sanctioned components for the production of drones and navigation equipment." Zelenskyy also indicated that Ukraine's medium-range strikes had successfully hit targets in both the Sea of Azov and the Black Sea.
These recent attacks align with Ukraine's stated objective to intensify its campaign aimed at disrupting Russia's military supply lines and energy infrastructure. The strategy seeks to diminish Moscow's capacity to sustain the conflict, now in its fifth year.
Russian Retaliation and Political Context
Concurrently, a "massive" Russian attack on Odesa city's port infrastructure was reported by Governor Oleh Kipper, resulting in at least one fatality, three injuries, and damage to facilities. Kipper also mentioned a Russian attack on a vessel flying the flag of Antigua and Barbuda.
The latest series of exchanges unfolds at the conclusion of a week marked by political turbulence within Ukraine. President Zelenskyy unexpectedly dismissed Defence Minister Mykhailo Fedorov on Wednesday, merely six months into his tenure. Fedorov, aged 35, had been instrumental in advancing Ukraine's drone industry, advocating for AI-driven drones capable of autonomous target identification and expanding the deployment of ground robots for logistical support and casualty evacuation. His removal triggered protests in Kyiv and other cities on Thursday and Friday, highlighting the domestic impact of wartime political decisions.
