Continued Military Engagements Mark Tenth Night of US Strikes
The United States has reportedly carried out its tenth consecutive night of military strikes against Iran, targeting various strategic sites. According to statements from US Central Command (CENTCOM), these operations, which concluded early Tuesday at 01:00 GMT, focused on Iranian military command centers, maritime capabilities, missile and drone launch sites, and air defense systems. This series of attacks underscores a sustained period of military engagement between the two nations.
Reports from Iran indicate that explosions were heard in multiple locations. Al Jazeera's Tohid Assidi, reporting from Tehran, noted blasts on Qeshm Island, a significant landmass in the Strait of Hormuz, as well as in the port cities of Bandar Abbas and Bandar Lengeh. Iran's IRIB state broadcaster also reported explosions in Shiraz, a southwestern city, around 1:00 AM local time (21:30 GMT) on Tuesday, specifying that an eastern and a western location within the city were targeted. However, conflicting information emerged regarding other areas, with the deputy governor of Isfahan province denying earlier reports of 'enemy aggression or explosions' in Isfahan city or its surrounding province, as cited by Mehr news agency. Similarly, the governor of Bushehr informed IRIB that sounds of explosions in his province were attributed to 'activity of defense systems.' Meanwhile, the Mehr News Agency cited Abdanan Governor Behzad Nourmohammadi, reporting several explosions in Abdanan, a city in Iran's western Ilam province.
Iran Retaliates Against US Military Assets in the Gulf
In response to the ongoing US strikes, Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has claimed responsibility for retaliatory actions against US military installations in Bahrain and Kuwait. The IRGC stated on Tuesday that it successfully destroyed a US air defense system and radar in Bahrain’s Muharraq area. Furthermore, the IRGC asserted that a coordinated missile and drone attack led to the destruction of a US Patriot air defense system located in Al-Riffa, Bahrain. These strikes, as conveyed by the IRGC through the IRIB broadcaster, were intended to pave the way for subsequent operations. The semi-official Tasnim news agency also reported IRGC claims of its aerospace force using cruise missiles to dismantle Amazon's central data infrastructure.
In Kuwait, the IRGC claimed to have targeted and destroyed several US military assets. Statements carried by the Tasnim news agency indicated that these strikes hit a long-range radar site, a telecommunications center, satellite receiving systems, and a missile defense radar belonging to the US military in Kuwait. The IRGC also asserted that it struck an MQ-9 drone hangar at the Ali Al Salem airbase, resulting in the destruction or severe damage of multiple unmanned aircraft.
Strait of Hormuz Tanker Incidents and Diplomatic Stances
Amidst the escalating military actions, the IRGC reported 'massive fires' on two oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz. These incidents reportedly occurred as the tankers attempted to navigate what the IRGC described as 'the unsafe southern route.' Following an explosion, rescue teams were deployed to evacuate the crews of the affected vessels. The IRGC issued a warning to shipping companies, urging them to prioritize crew safety, disregard 'false information from the US military,' and avoid routes deemed dangerous. A stark declaration from the IRGC added, 'It is obvious that as long as America’s evils continue in the region, the Strait of Hormuz will be closed, and not even a drop of oil, gas, or a package of chemical fertiliser will be exported from the region.'
From Washington, DC, Al Jazeera's Kimberly Halkett reported that the White House communicated to Al Jazeera that US strikes would persist 'until the president decides otherwise.' Despite the ongoing military operations, the White House statement also emphasized that diplomatic discussions between the two nations are continuing, indicating a complex situation involving both confrontational actions and attempts at dialogue.
