Deadly Attack in Hangu District
A police checkpoint in Hangu district, located in Pakistan's Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province near the Afghan border, was the target of a severe attack. The raid resulted in the deaths of at least 11 police officers and injuries to numerous others, as reported by local officials.
Details of the Assault
The attack began with the use of explosive-laden quadcopters, which were deployed to target the police post. This was followed by an ambush that led to an extended gunfight with security forces. According to a police statement, 15 attackers were killed during the confrontation.
Besides the fatalities, 28 officers sustained injuries and required hospitalization. Among the deceased was Deputy Superintendent Diyar Khan, who had led reinforcements to the scene. The attackers also set fire to three police vehicles and seized another, as detailed by district police officer Mujahid Hussain.
Rising Violence in Border Areas
The attack occurred shortly after a deadly suicide bombing in the nearby district of Tank, for which the Pakistan Taliban, also known as Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), claimed responsibility. Although no group has yet claimed responsibility for the Hangu attack, the region has witnessed a sharp increase in violence targeting military and police forces.
Al Jazeera's Kamal Hyder, reporting from Islamabad, noted an uptick in attacks along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border. The Pakistani government accuses fighters of using Afghan territory as a safe haven for training and planning assaults in Pakistan. The Afghan Taliban government disputes these claims, attributing the unrest to Pakistan's internal issues.
