Key Players Return for Bangladesh Tests
Australia's cricket team is set to welcome back several prominent players for their two-Test series against Bangladesh next month. Bailey, speaking to reporters via video call, emphasized the squad's depth. "We won’t be locking in an 11 this far out," he stated. "We do know that across this two-Test series, the depth is there." This cautious approach suggests that while the key players are available, the selectors may still consider various combinations to manage player workloads and optimize performance.
Hazlewood's Comeback and Competition
Josh Hazlewood, with an impressive record of 295 Test wickets at an average of 24.21, has been a pivotal bowler for Australia. "Scotty would never say it, but yeah, I think he’s mounting a strong case that when you use the words of big three [fast bowlers], that he could be one of those," Bailey remarked, highlighting the healthy rivalry within the squad.
Hazlewood's recall means that Michael Neser, despite a commendable Ashes performance, did not secure a spot in the squad. This decision underscores the depth of talent available to Australian selectors in the fast-bowling department.
Batting Order Changes and Emerging Talents
The squad also sees changes in the batting lineup following opener Usman Khawaja's retirement, which opens up an opportunity at the top of the order. South Australia's Jake Weatherald has been retained, despite a challenging debut Test series in the Ashes where he averaged 22.33 across five matches. While the left-handed opener has yet to fully convince, Bailey expressed that selectors saw positive aspects in his opening partnership with Travis Head during the Ashes.
"Hopefully we do see some growth out of that [Ashes] and some understanding of what it takes for success at Test level," Bailey commented, indicating a belief in Weatherald's potential to develop into a consistent performer at the highest level.
Cameron Green has also maintained his place in the squad, despite a somewhat disappointing Ashes series with both bat and ball. He is one of two all-rounders included, alongside Beau Webster, providing valuable flexibility to the team composition. Josh Inglis has been retained as a potential middle-order batting option, further adding to the squad's versatility.

Australia currently leads the World Test Championship table at the midway point of the cycle. The upcoming series against fourth-placed Bangladesh offers a crucial opportunity for Australia to consolidate their position before a challenging tour of South Africa in October.
