Authorities in Washington state have taken a man into custody on suspicion of arson, linking him to the largest of three wildfires currently affecting the Spokane area. The fires have necessitated the evacuation of numerous residents, with approximately 65,000 people displaced from their homes.

The individual, identified as 37-year-old Aaron Farinacci, was arrested on Monday in connection with the Old Trails fire. He faces a first-degree arson charge and is currently being held on a $1 million bond. Spokane County Sheriff John Nowels informed reporters that a witness reportedly observed Farinacci kneeling in the grassy area where investigators believe the fire originated.

This arrest comes as firefighting crews continue to combat the blazes, which have consumed substantial acreage around Spokane, a city home to approximately 230,000 people situated near the Idaho border. The collective area scorched by the fires now totals 8,026 acres (3,248 hectares), according to data from the federal interagency fire information system, InciWeb.

Widespread Destruction and Displacements

Preliminary aerial assessments indicate that between 700 and 1,110 structures have been destroyed since the wildfires erupted over the past weekend. The extensive damage has contributed to the large-scale displacement of residents. While no injuries have been reported, officials are actively trying to establish contact with 14 individuals who have been unreachable by mobile phone. Sheriff Nowels clarified that these individuals are not currently considered missing persons.

Japan continues to experience widespread heat alerts, while South Korea recently recorded its highest temperature ever. In Europe, wildfires have led to evacuations in Greece and continue to pose threats to areas in Spain and France.
